YUTURI

Yuturi
Biological Reserve

In the Quechua language, the word yuturi
is the name of the conga ant so common in the region. Yuturi is
a biological reserve with a number of different habitats and its
fantastic riches allow us to observe different kinds of life represented
by reptiles, mammals, nocturnal animals and insects, and most especially,
an enormous variety of birds.
Swampy lagoons, flooded jungles, and even a virgin
forest are the setting for a great adventure and the discovery of
a world full of peace and beauty.
The Yuturi cabins are truly a paradise. They are
located 180 km east of the city of Coca, and it is necessary to
navigate five hours by canoe in the Napo River to reach it. The
canoes are comfortable, have lifesavers for all the passengers and
there is an awning for long journeys. The compound is located on
a small hill that has a magnificent view of the Yuturi River and
the nearby lagoons.
The restful compound has 15 two and three-bed cabins
made of material found in the region in order to preserve the harmony
of the surroundings. The very comfortable cabins have private bathrooms
with a shower, and every bed has a mosquito net. There is a large
dining room where excellent meals are served. There are qualified
naturalist guides and as well as native guides who know the area
well. In addition to all these conveniences, there are also excursions
and activities related to the jungle such as nocturnal visits in
canoes, rowing in the river to search for alligators and reptiles,
observing endemic plants, watching insects and nocturnal animals,
leaving early in the morning to watch birds, fishing for piranhas,
visiting the Isle of the Chorongos to see monkeys, visiting the
Indian community of Samona Yuturi, making baskets and hammocks,
using a blow gun, learning about medicinal plants and going on adventure
hikes into the jungle for 7-hour periods. Our personalized attention
allows the visitor to choose the activities he or she wants to be
involved in according to the different programs available.
BIRDWATCHING,
A POTENTIAL ATTRACTION:
Yuturi is considered one of the best sites for bird-watching. Ornithological
research studies have determined the existence of more than 400
species of birds that can be found in their different habitats within
the Yuturi Biological Reserve. In order to facilitate bird-watching,
there is an observation tower just a 20-minute walk from the cabins
where it is possible to observe many species of birds difficult
to find in other places, and the view is also spectacular.
Departures:
We
have planned programs of 4days/3 nights from Friday to Monday and
5 days/4 nights from Monday to Friday. Groups of five persons may
leave any day of the week. We also offer special itineraries for
ornithologists.
